I am involved in a new project and I'm really, really excited about this! I've been trying to keep this under wraps for a while now but now it can be told. Seda Centrio Hotel, the newest luxury hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippines, is set to hold a very special event on June 15, 2013. It's so special that Seda Hotel Centrio CDO folks are flying in celebrities, artists and even national media friends. I can't divulge more details but suffice it to say that this will be the must-have invite of the year! :) Do follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google Plus for updates on this starry, starry event ;) For the uninitiated, Seda Centrio CDO is the latest boutique-business hotel owned and managed by Ayala Land. I have so much respect for people and organizations that champion alternative sources of energy for clean and reliable electrical power production! Currently, we depend largely on hydropower plants. Some electric cooperatives also use several solar panels to augment their sources of energy (Cagayan de Oro’s CEPALCO has a solar panel area) and we all know about the Bangui Wind Farm in Ilocos Norte. But what about production of electricity without doing much harm to the environment? What about affordable electricity brought about by alternative-energy technologies? Gasification is a solution! Gasification is a process of converting organic or carbon-containing matter into synthetic gas or syngas which could be used to generate electricity. I’m particularly interested with this because ...

Enter the “Balwarte” of the Jalosjos clan – Zamboanga

Announcements, Controversial, Government, Media, Mindanao, Politics, Television, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga Sibugay
A few weeks ago, I joined a Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) - organized workshop. Media practitioners from all over Mindanao attended it. I think Mindanaoan was the only one from the "non-traditional" or online media community. Anyways, I met some Zamboanga-based journalists and they all shared the current political landscape in their area. They said that the May 2013 elections will be another show of force by the popular Jalosjos clan. I wanted to know more about how the members of the Jalosjos clan practically lorded over Zamboanga del Norte / Zamboanga Peninsula for many years and how, as my Zamboanga journalist friends would say, a "blessing" from someone like Romeo Jalosjos would spell a "sure win." Fortunately, TV5 recently visited Zamboanga and in...

It's not everyday that you meet young, socially aware Filipinos who want to help others and spur change in their own communities. That's why when I was invited to be one of the judges of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards 2012 Mindanao Area Finals, it didn't even take me a second to say yes. Besides, I've been writing about and following the TAYO Awards for years - I thought it was about time that I hear all the fascinating and inspiring stories of successful youth groups around Mindanao myself. The 2012 TAYO Awards theme is: Tayo Revolution: Isang Dekada ng Pagbabago The Search for the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) is now on its 10th year. It is by far the only award-giving program that recognizes the youth organizations that have started poc...

A native of Talakag, Bukidnon, Allan Bigcas filed his COC today, October 2, 2012 at around 11:30 a.m. at the Bukidnon Provincial Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office. Bigcas said that he is running as Bukidnon governor under the Liberal Party but the certification that was attached to his COC was specifically from Aksyon Demokratiko party. The certification was signed by the party secretary general Ernesto Ramel. Bigcas said that Aksyon Demokratiko was in alliance with the Liberal Party. Why you should join Kumbira 2012 in Cagayan de Oro

It's Kumbira 2012 time again! Every year, the Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA) organizes a professional and student culinary competition and trade show dubbed "Kumbira." Derived from the same Visayan word that means "feast," Kumbira is the largest culinary event in Mindanao - so large that it actually lasts for 3 days! (this is the first reason why you should join Kumbira 2012, by the way! Don't you think it's exciting to be a part of an event so grand?) This year is no different. "Kumbira 2012" will be held on August 15, 16 and 17, 2012 at the Atrium of Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City and - this brings me to the second reason why you should join Kumbira 2012 in Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, Philippines - Kumbira 2012, which is now on its 16th year, has, accordin...
Backpacking in Camiguin Island

Backpacking in Camiguin Island

Camiguin, Mindanao, Tourism, Travel
Camiguin, also known as the Island Born Out Of Fire, is an island one passes by on a boat ride between Cebu and Cagayan de Oro City. This small island has seven volcanoes, several waterfalls, and hot and cold springs. People visit Camiguin to primarily enjoy the water spots, but there’s more to the island than testing its waters. Also known as the island of fire because of its many volcanoes, Camiguin is rumored to one day simply sink should there be a terrible eruption. But before that happens (and hopefully not), its best you know that Mt. Hibok-Hibok – the most active among the seven volcanoes – has been dormant since it erupted last 1951. Scientists are monitoring the volcanoes as well, as a cautionary measure and for study. You can either fly in Camiguin or take the ferry. Most ...

If you listen to the news on Mindanao, the most likely reaction is that you’ll hesitate to come here. Much less choose to live here. But given the direness of the news on the peace and order situation here, have you ever wondered if there are perks to living in Mindanao? Actually, what’s so terrible in the news is merely a microcosm of Mindanao society. Given the largeness of the island and the number of regions, cities, and cultures that are found in Mindanao, you might want to take the news with a grain of salt the next time. Mindanao is generally a peaceful place. The members of the populace are satisfied with their lives, and commerce and trade are smoothly moving along. The economics show a due representation from the filthy rich to poverty level poor, but people manage to get by. ...

If you set foot in the lands of Zamboanga City, one of the first things that get into your mind is the feeling that you’re in some other part of the world, perhaps in Spain or in Latin America. But don’t be deceived, you’re not in any city in the west; you are actually in a more beautiful and alluring city called Zamboanga. Often called as “Philippines’ little Spain” and “Asia’s Latin City,” Zamboanga City is a highly urbanized city that lies in the southernmost tip of Region IX in northwestern Mindanao. The sixth largest city in the Philippines and among the few cities independent of any province, Zamboanga City is bounded to the north by land masses and to the other directions by water formations that include the Sulu Sea (west), Moro Gulf (east), Basilan Straight (south) and Celebes ...

Ozamiz City: The enviable destination of northwestern Mindanao

The city of Ozamiz is a second class city that stretches out along Panguil Bay in the northwestern part of Mindanao, Philippines. Although it is only a chartered city and not the capital of the Misamis Occidental province, Ozamiz is a prospering city that is the provincial center for health, transportation, education and commerce. With the city’s convenient setting, it has become a historical, cultural and pilgrimage destination in this part of the country. Currently, several projects are underway to boost the development of the city and to make it an even more anticipated destination in the south. Ozamiz City was formerly called Misamis by the early settlers composed mostly of the native Subanons, Jesuit missionaries and other Spaniards. Later, a steady influx of settlers from nearb...

Butuan City is known for its booming logging industry and for its abundance of timbers; no wonder why migrants from other sides of the Philippines and from abroad settled in this highly urbanized city to seek for good fortune and agricultural profits. But more than just being the Timber City of the South, Butuan is a place where rich history, preserved culture, kind-hearted people and active economy thrive. Butuan City is the provincial capital of the Agusan del Norte province and the regional center of the Caraga Region in the northeastern part of Mindanao. It sprawls near the mouth of the Agusan River, the deepest, widest and longest navigable river in Mindanao. On the north, it is bounded by several municipalities of Agusan del Norte; on the east by the Agusan del Sur province; and o...

YEY! I am so, so, sooo happy with this development! Congratulations Davao City! What an awesome move! I'm so proud of my hometown Davao City for finally, FINALLY deciding to put a ban against non-biodegradable plastic bags and styrofoam! Points for Mother Nature, environment and the start of the use of eco-friendly products :) I wonder, though, how the fastfood chains and other business establishments that use plastic bags and styrofoam will cope when the ban takes effect on June 28, 2012. Hmm. What do you think? Anyways, here's the news report from SunStar Davao: Non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene foam as food and beverage containers will no longer be allowed in this city starting June 28, this year. Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) claimed thousands of lives, left tens of thousands of homes damaged (some damaged beyond repair, some totally wiped out) and basically left so much destruction in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan - two cities in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Both cities are still trying to cope - so much still needs to be done. Still, I'm happy to share with you all that amid ongoing relief and rehabilitation operations, there also are movements from various sectors of society to REBUILD both cities. Tourism, after all, can do wonders for a city. We all know that the more tourists, the better the economy and...
