Mindanaoans beware – Typhoon Urduja to hit Mindanao

Fellow Mindanaoans! Let's all be on alert! PAGASA has said that tropical depression “Urduja” has entered the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday afternoon and it has now hit Mindanao and Visayas. Here in Mindanao, storm signal number 1 has already been raised over Camiguin, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat and Siargao Island. According to PAGASA, typhoon Urduja is bringing strong winds from 30 to 60 kilometers per hour. Let's all take the necessary precautions. In my side of the world, the weather's turning to be very chilly.It rained a bit earlier today and I reckon more rainshowers will come later today. The skies are very dark and heavy here. Thankfully, my fellow Dabawenyos and I can now finally say that our beloved Davao City REALLY is a world-class city to live in. I just learned that the world's most livable city will soon have its very own sports dome --- fully airconditioned, ready to accommodate roughly 8,000 people and worth roughly P100 million. And here's something that may surprise a lot of people --- the City Government of Davao need not shell out a single cent since the funds for this project have been sourced elsewhere --- i.e. the national government funds. Interestingly, the funding for this Davao City sports dome will be taken from the congressional development fund of the Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles, a certified Dabawenyo. The press statement of the upcoming Mindanao Power Summit 2009 alarmed me. It said that "by 2014, projections have it that Mindanao will have a deficit capacity of 484 megawatts which is equivalent to putting out power in the five major cities of Mindanao - Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Butuan, and Cotabato." That means that five years from now, Mindanao will suffer a devastating power crisis and that the situation may reach the most critical state if we do not act fast and act now. The press statement also claimed that the entire Mindanao grid may experience regular rotating brownouts as early as next year (!), especially with the coming in of additional new investments that are anticipated to further deplete the grid’s reserve capacity. EEVEE, which represented the Philippine Women's College of Davao City, bested 13 other groups from all over the Philippines. EEVEE received P250,000.00 cash, an exclusive recording contract with Sony Music Philippines and their school, PWC, will receive P100,000.00 worth of music equipment. Batchoy at Tita Annie’s Victoria Plaza Davao City Mindanao – fail!

Upon my mom's prodding, we decided to eat at Tita Annie's at Victoria Plaza, Bajada, Davao City in a recent trip to my hometown Davao. I was craving for batchoy at that time so I ordered the Tita Annie's special batchoy. Batchoy is basically comprised of sweet meat broth, slices of meat and pork innards, spring onions, garlic and other taste enhancers plus fresh noodles. Batchoy is usually topped off with crushed pork cracklings (chicharon). So you can just imagine my dismay when this was served to me: Not only did it taste bland, I particularly didn't like the fact that the chicharon wasn't crushed. The licensed bottler of RC Cola in the Philippines is allotting P1 Billion for the establishment of a new bottling facility here in Mindanao. Asiawide Refreshments Corporation's new state-of-the-art bottling facility is set to address the softdrink markets especially in the Davao and General Santos regions. The new RC Cola bottling facility will be put up in Davao City, Mindanao and will hopefully be operational by the first quarter of 2010. Of course, this does not only mean additional jobs for the people in Mindanao but this also shows the confidence of business owners and capitalists on the potential of Mindanao. AdZU Concert Band marks 77 years with STINT, to hold concert in Davao and CDO

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Concert Band will mark its 77th anniversary with a ground-breaking tour of Mindanao. “This concert tour is in celebration of the Sesquicentennial (150 years) of the return of the Jesuits to the Philippines,” said band director Apolonio “Poli” G. Mindanaoan Manny Pacquiao defeats Miguel Cotto, grabs welterweight boxing crown!

Fellow Mindanaoan and the world's best pound for pound boxing champ Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has defeated Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto just a few minutes ago. Pacquiao won against Cotto on the 12th round via TKO. The boxing referee had to stop the fight with only 55 seconds remaining in the 12th round. Filipino boxing champ Pacquiao, who now has 7 boxing titles, has successfully grabbed the World Boxing Organization welterweight boxing title. The Pacquiao versus Cotto fight took place Saturday night at MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. During the fight, Cotto was knocked down twice and his ears, nose and most of his face got bloodied. Congratulations Manny Pacquiao! The world, especially the Philippines, is truly proud of you!

Mining company in Mindanao hires APO Hiking Society’s Danny Javier

Yes, you read that right. A mining company operating in the Municipality of Tampakan has hired Danny Javier of the popular group APO Hiking Society. Javier is now a "strategist" for Sagittarius Mines, Inc., a gold and copper mine. As a "strategist," Javier is reportedly supposed to help SMI develop a "better image." It can be recalled that the said mining company, which has business interests in three large areas in Mindanao namely South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur, has and still is facing strong opposition especially from the Church. Zubiri, Jr. and political archrival JR Nereus "Neric" Acosta MAY soon sing sweet music together. This, after Zubiri is reportedly eyeing a "transfer" to the Liberal Party from LAKAS-CMD-KAMPI. Davao region soon to be a lobster production area?

A PNA article caught my attention today. It said that an American feeds supplier is eyeing lobster production in the Davao region here in Mindanao! A certain Denzil Nicholson of Verdant Ocean, an aquaculture feeds company, said that they're keen on the possibility of producing lobsters in Davao. "The region is a good area for development. It is one of the most viable industries as lobster stocks are on the decline," Nicholson was quoted as saying. Did you notice the tricky part? He said "lobster stocks are on the decline." Davao Crocodile Park – another must-visit place in Mindanao

Visiting Davao City, Mindanao soon? My mom, some of her students and I were in my hometown Davao City a few days ago and we visited the Davao Crocodile Park. Located at Riverfront Corporate City, Diversion Road, Ma-a, this popular Davao City tourist spot is a must-visit place in Mindanao. Owned by fellow Dabawenyo Sonny Dizon, Davao Crocodile Park also houses other exotic animals such as bats, monkeys, tigers (yep!), bearcats (super cute!), ostriches, snakes (I stayed as far as possible from the pythons! LOL) and some reptiles. Of course, the crocodiles are the "stars" of the park.
