Dabawenya Mindanaoan to compete in Binibining Pilipinas 2009

Beauty, Davao City, Entertainment, Features, Mindanaoan Artists, Mindanaoan Update, Personalities, Society
I was pleasantly surprised to see our "Baby South" during the press presentation of the official candidates of this year's Binibining Pilipinas 2009 pageant. "Baby South" refers to Priscilla Mae Navidad, a 17 year old Dabawenya. I met Mae a few years ago in Davao City, Mindanao. I was helping organize the Davao leg of the nationwide "Rainbow Tour" of premiere Filipino band South Border and after the concert, I was also selling copies of their award-winning platinum CD, "Episode III" (yes, I know, major plugging na 'to LOL :D) Anyways, there was this tall girl who kept on asking me if she could meet Jay Durias (South Border's musical director and keyboardist) because, according to her, they were cousins. I must admit, I had reservations at first because after all, there was virtually A M...

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Sylvester “Sly” Stallone together in a movie?

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Features, General Santos City, Mindanaoan Update, Movies
Well, this information's straight from Erik Pineda, Manny Pacquiao's business manager, so I guess this one's true! Pacquiao is reportedly set to do a movie with Rambo himself, Sylvester "Sly" Stallone. In fact, the duo reportedly met at Stallone's office in Los Angeles, California last January 6, 2009. During the meeting, Sly even gave the Pacman's two sons, Jimwell and Michael, a pair of boxing gloves which bore the signature of former world light-heavyweight champion Tony Tarver. Still, this piece of development shouldn't be treated as a 100-percent-fully-done-and-waxed type of deal. Everything's still in the planning stage. Erik Pineda was quoted as saying that it's "not a boxing movie but something like ‘Rush Hour’ (a Jacky Chan-Chris Tucker hit." Looks like Manny, who's a certif...

Bukidnon anticipates “Love Me Again (Land Down Under)” but needs to go to CDO or Davao to view film

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Features, Mindanao, Mindanaoan Update, Movies
Residents of Bukidnon Province, Mindanao are highly anticipating the showing of the Angel Locsin-Piolo Pascual starrer "Love Me Again (Land Down Under)" come January 15, 2009. However, there's one catch - they need to either travel to Cagayan de Oro City (which is roughly 2 hours away from Bukidnon's capital city Malaybalay) or Davao City (which is about 5 hours away by land) OR wait for the DVD version of the movie (hopefully some won't resort to buying pirated copies of the film!). You see, there aren't any movie houses or cinemas in the entire province of Bukidnon. After the Belyca cinema in Malaybalay City closed down years ago, no other movie house has operated in the capital city of the said province that's considered the food basket of Mindanao. (I actually remember those days wh...

Features, Mindanaoan Update, Personal, Society, Style
Men are not the only ones racking their brains out as to what’s the best gift for the female loved ones this Christmas season, the women are also having a hard time too! Unlike in the past where the easiest gift to pick for men are jackets or pants, women are now challenged with the fact that men are also embarking in the modern age where there’s a lot of things to choose from. Trend expert Vincent Gregoire gave some cool tips for women in what great gifts to give to their male loved ones. He suggested that before scrimping for gifts, women should think of practical and intelligent presents. • USB memory sticks or external hard drives. Men are becoming more tech savvy and providing them additional memory in storing files is a safe bet. • Items that would look good in his pad. Y...

Jewels in times of crisis – The cosmic powers of a young man’s artworks

Arts, Business, Fashion, Features, Mindanaoan Update, Style
He walks into a room and one would think he is just another guitar-toting, carefree boy next door. But far from that image is how this young man actually views life and the powers beyond an ordinary human’s comprehension. This young man, in fact, cares so much for his fellow that he has devoted much of his life to helping people out through his cosmic jewelries. Born and raised in Israel, David Weitzman is far from being typical. Through his Ka Jewelry, Weitzman has labeled himself a cosmic jeweler who comes up with designs that have more than what meets the eyes. “I deal with universal symbols that are not only religious but are also related to the cosmos,” Weitzman explains. “Ka, in fact, means life force. It is something that is universal and exists in all cultures, like the Hindu...

Tales from the Piolo Pascual – Angel Locsin Bukidnon movie shoot

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Features
Three weeks after the entire cast of the tentatively titled "Land Down Under" movie arrived here in the Province of Bukidnon, the Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin Bukidnon cowboy movie fever is still on. Several exciting tales, funny anecdotes and clearly soon-to-be urban legends/tales have begun to sprout. From university students who still seem to be tickled pink because Piolo smiled at them to teachers who pretended not to care when they saw Piolo at a restaurant (but excitedly shared their experience with fellow teachers and to their eager students) to a local family that got a substantial amount of money in exchange for his humble bahay kubo, the tales have spread and the locals merrily discuss the stories every single day. Naturally, the Municipality of Impasug-ong, noted as t...

Halloween special: Knowing the different types of dreams

Features
Have you ever wondered about your dreams? Have you ever thought of the types of dreams you have? If you have, then this entry is for you. Read on: Repetitive Dreams Recurring or repetitive dreams are the common types of dreams. However, it can be important to say that these dreams are important to those who are dreaming them because they carry a message which is worth recovering. If your dream has been repeated since you were young, it must be something related to your personality. Predictive Dreams Predictive dreams are always treated with caution. There are some examples which h...

Meeting other Mindanaoan bloggers

Davao City, Events, Features, Internet, Technology
My brother and I attended the Digital Filipino Club and Bloggers Davao City Networking event last October 21, 2008 at the Pantawan Hall of the Casino Filipino branch at Grand Regal Hotel, Lanang. Although it wasn't really my first time to attend a bloggers event, it was the first time for me to attend one in Mindanao. My brother and I initially planned to attend the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit in General Santos City (I actually exchanged a few emails with lead organizer Avel) but things just got too darn busy that we overlooked the deadline for registration. Sucks, I know. That's why we were glad to learn about the Davao networking event. At least we were able to see several Mindanaoan bloggers who will be in GenSan for the MBS 2 and we were able to personally meet Janette Toral...
