Valdehueza Yap, 20, won the title of Miss US-International 2009 during the pageant held July 7-10, 2009 at the Stafford Conference Centre in Houston, Texas. Aileen Jan Yap will represent the US in the 49th Miss International pageant to be held at the Venetian Macao Resort in Macau, China on November 7, 2009. Mindanao vice mayor incurs 99 absences out of 100 council sessions

The banner story of a Mindanao regional newspaper yesterday, July 1, 2009, may have been surprising for many (shocking even) but for a Mindanao journalist like me who has been working around politicians for quite a while, it was really nothing new. The same thing, although probably not as "worse," has been happening not only in the local city councils but also even down to barangay councils and even in the Senate and Congress. According to Mindanao Gold Star Daily, Cagayan de Oro City Vice Mayor Vicente Emano has reportedly incurred 99 absences out of 100 council sessions. So I'm back from a very brief visit to my hometown, Davao City, Mindanao. While it felt refreshing to be back home, my stay was a painfully short one so it was still really BITIN. My mother, brothers and I were in Wadab town to celebrate one my younger brothers' birthday. Anyways, the highlight of my Davao City trip was the much-awaited Xcelerator adventure. I have so much to share about my Outland Adventure Xcelerator adventure (I'll also share some photos!) - I'll write more about that tomorrow. Thermal scanner to be installed at Lumbia Airport Cagayan de Oro

I got word that Philippine Airlines (PAL) has donated a thermal scanner that can detect if a person has flu or fever. This thermal scanner is set to be installed at the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City, Northern Mindanao very soon. This is really very good news especially since there are now 10 confirmed H1N1 virus cases in the country (and if I'm not mistaken, three people in the Caraga region, Mindanao are currently being suspected of carrying the deadly virus as well) Interestingly, it had to take a corporate giant like PAL to donate a working thermal scanner just so passengers using the Cagayan de Oro airport can be assessed for fever or flu or be more protected against the H1N1 virus. So exactly where's the health department in all of these? What about the local government?...

Is Xavier University to blame for the recent suicides?

So two students of Ateneo de Cagayan University (Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao) have committed suicide in the past few weeks. Roldan Bacadon, who graduated magna cum laude no less, committed suicide last Black Saturday. He allegedly drank poison and was allegedly depressed. A few weeks later, 20-year old Iphraim dela Cruz, a Xavier University Nursing student hanged himself to death. Again, it was allegedly because of depression. Dela Cruz allegedly got a failing grade. Observers are now asking: is it high time for Xavier University to re-examine their standards? Is it high time for the school to re-evaluate their teachers? VJANDEP pastels owner pays the price

After he purportedly said, "The Chinese are not people...hayop (animal)!," the owner of popular VJANDEP Pastels has paid quite a price. VJANDEP Pastels, a business owned by the Jose family, is best known for its pastel buns --- soft bread buns filled with various fillings such as yema/custard, uba, chocolate etc. These pastel buns are popular "pasalubong" items from Camiguin Island and Cagayan de Oro City. Col. Virgilio Jose allegedly said that in an April 22 meeting with fellow traders. He later claimed that he only said those "remarks purely in jest." Aye Navarro and Cocong Ohashi sustained serious injuries, burns and bruises. Aye’s car was totally wrecked and Cocong underwent an operation for internal bleeding. The curious case of the CagayanCon 2009 website and a controversy?

The 1st Cagayan de Oro Construction Show 2009 (CagayanCon '09) was held last January 16, 17 and 18, 2009 at the Rotunda, Lim Ket Kai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippines. I've been so preoccupied during the holiday season that I now only had the chance to post this picture! Well, better late than never, eh? :) Here's a picture that I took of the large Christmas tree found in Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. I took this on a Friday, which coincidentally was also "Night Cafe" day in CDO. "Night Cafe" is a regular Friday and Saturday event in the City of Golden Friendship. Most roads within the Divisoria area are closed to traffic and various vendors put up shop along the streets. So without further ado - here's the lighted Christmas tree. Pretty, yes?
