I must admit that even a few days after my humble Mindanaoan.com blog won as Best Lifestyle Blog for Mindanao in the Philippine Blog Awards 2010, I still am on cloud 9. While a lot of people have already congratulated me (and I still continue to receive several congratulatory messages until now) and even my ever-supportive Mama has already made plans to have a special tarp printed and displayed (yikes! :D), nothing prepared me for an absolutely wonderful surprise I got yesterday. Mining company in Mindanao hires APO Hiking Society’s Danny Javier

Yes, you read that right. A mining company operating in the Municipality of Tampakan has hired Danny Javier of the popular group APO Hiking Society. Javier is now a "strategist" for Sagittarius Mines, Inc., a gold and copper mine. As a "strategist," Javier is reportedly supposed to help SMI develop a "better image." It can be recalled that the said mining company, which has business interests in three large areas in Mindanao namely South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur, has and still is facing strong opposition especially from the Church. A lot of non government organizations which advocate environmental sustainability have also expressed their opposition against the operation of Sagittarius Mines. RTMI bus bombed in Kabacan, North Cotabato…and I was just there 2 days ago!

My, my...this really scared the wits out of me. Less than 24 hours after I posted this entry about my first ever trip to Koronadal City (where the Rural Transit Bus I took had a brief stop at Kabacan, North Cotabato), I found out that a Rural Transit bus with body number 2772 got bombed Monday afternoon. And I was just there...in the very same place...two days ago! An improvised bomb reportedly exploded inside the bus. A passenger, who allegedly boarded the vehicle in Bukidnon, left a bag at the back part of the vehicle. The bomb explosion left four people injured. Coincidentally, a bomb also exploded at a bridge in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, Mindanao. The bridge has been declared "unsafe for passage." When will all these ever end?

Review: EMR Suites in Koronadal City, Mindanao

My companions and I were billeted at EMR Suites in Koronadal City, Mindanao last week. We were in the land formerly called Marbel for a two-day gig at EMR Center, which was actually just a few steps away from EMR Suites. Two words to describe my 3-night stay? UBER COMFORTABLE. My room had a large queen sized bed (you may also opt for the room with two single beds), an airconditioning unit, a table large enough for you to place your laptop and a few work-related stuff on, a few stools (my room had three), a large flat screen TV, cable connection and space for your clothes. The bathroom, meanwhile, was clean (this is very important, of course). It had hot and cold shower. Water current was strong, which I liked. Forgive the hint of doubt but let's face it - we're in the midst of global economic turbulence and we know just how many have lost their jobs. While it's true President Gloria Arroyo announced that the government is doing its best to offer "temporary jobs" to workers who recently got laid off (not sure if this so-called program has even started yet or is merely press release), her office did also say that they're offering loan packages to former OFWs from Taiwan and other countries - but we hear of a ton of complaints from these former OFWs. They claim that after going to and fro government agencies and submitting all pertinent documents, a lot of them have yet to receive a single cent.
