Wow, go Mindanao! This piece of news about my beloved hometown is definitely heartwarming :) Davao City will send P10 Million from the city's own calamity fund for the victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy (international code name: Ketsana). Thank you to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and to all the members of the city council for this effort! I salute you all and of course, I salute all fellow Dabawenyos for the hard work you've all exerted so far. The money will be coursed through the Philippine National Red Cross. Meanwhile, if you're in Davao City and have some relief goods or clothes or food to share, please don't hesitate to drop them off at these areas: - Ateneo de Davao University (go Ateneo! :) I'm so proud of my school hehe) - ABS-CBN Davao City (Mc Arthur Highway, Matina) ...

Mindanaoan still can't concentrate well. As much as I want to work and attend to various other matters, I still can't help but log on to Twitter via Tweetdeck (which I highly recommend that you Twitter-holics use, by the way) and check how the search and rescue as well as the relief goods distribution efforts for Typhoon Ondoy victims are doing. I keep on retweeting helpful information as much as I can and it warms my heart to see so many private citizens doing their share in helping the victims. Interestingly, though, I received a comment today in my "Advertise" page from a person who calls himself "ew." I reckon he's from Luzon. Check this out: ew gmtristan.com [email protected] 125.60.228.50 (I.P. address) ew……….what an ODD offer…and sorry to say this..but the quality of ...

Kimmy Dora was hilarious! Congratulations Eugene Domingo and Spring Films!

This is a long-delayed post, I know, since I'm pretty sure most of you have already watched this film (if you haven't yet, you're missing a whole damn lot!!!) However, I still want to write about this since I gave my word to Erickson Raymundo (one of the producers of the film, along with fellow Spring Films people Joyce Bernal and Piolo Pascual) that I'll write about this. Kimmy Dora Kambal Sa Kiyeme was so damn funny, wasn't it? Erickson, you were right on the money! :) Hearty congratulations to Eugene Domingo (you were so fab! I think you're the only Pinay actress who successfully made my mom laugh so damn hard! LOL), Dingdong Dantes, Zanjoe Marudo (hello, six pack!), Miriam Quiambao (you surprised me!), Ariel Ureta and Baron Geisler! My mom and I watched this flick in one of the ...

So this Mindanao blog is finally back on track! :)  If you're a regular visitor of my humble blog, you may have noticed a couple of changes in the past few days. Because my blog has turned one year old, I wanted a new, fresher look. Hence, after hours of searching for a good, clean and functional Wordpress theme, I finally settled for this Typogriph theme. Do you guys like it? I do! :D I think my posts are easier to read now and my blog looks wide! :) My old theme, Revolution Church by Brian Gardner served me so well and I would like to thank Brian for letting me have a free copy (the Church theme can now be purchased at a reasonable price) and for letting me use it for an entire year. Thank you very much, Brian! I've also installed additional useful Wordpress plugins - one of which is ...

Sir George Pension House in Cagayan de Oro City, Northern Mindanao is fast becoming one of my favorite budget accommodations in CDO. I think I've checked in 3 or 4 times after my very first stay at that cheap hotel in Cagayan de Oro City. I like the accessibility of the place (it's located at corner Pabayo and Gaerlan streets, just a few blocks away from the heart of Divisoria), the room rates are relatively cheap (single room rate starts at P600.00) and they offer FREE Wi-Fi! Read more about my review of Sir George Pension House over at the Mindanao Hotels page. I won't delve more into the amenities of this CDO pension house, though. What I want to share with you guys are these photos of my funny looking yet pretty darn cute hotel room visitor! During my most recent stay at Sir G...

Sen. Dick Gordon proposes a 9th ray to the sun in Philippine Flag – should Mindanao care?

Advocacy, ARMM, BIMP-EAGA, Blogging, Commentary, Controversial, Government, Headline
Independent Senator Richard Gordon probably has too much time on his hands. This was the very first thing that came to my mind when this Mindanaoan blogger learned that Senator Dick Gordon filed a proposal before the Senate to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine Flag. Yes, you read that right. A ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine Flag. According to him, the additional ray will symbolize his "advocacy to champion reforms in Mindanao." Now don't ask me exactly how a 9th ray can make a whole lotta difference but if you ask the senator (who, I think, also has plans to run for president come May 2010), he says this move is part of his many advocacies for "peace and continuous growth and development not only for the Muslim people but also for the whole of Mindanao." The me...

Before I forget --- Mindanaoan (Blogging the REAL Mindanao!) - Blog Sa Usa Ka Taga Mindanao - recently turned ONE! Yep, this blog just turned one year old! How fast time flies, eh? Mindanaoan finally received money from Nuffnang Philippines, Asia Pacific's First Blog Advertising Community. The first payout isn't that much but it's good enough to treat myself to a mini shopping spree soon. I'm looking forward to a bigger payout next time, though ;) Nuffnang boasts of a community composed of 100,000 blogs and of 3 million viewers per day. Pretty impressive, yes? If you're a blogger like me, why don't you consider joining the Nuffnang Philippines community as well? By the way, apart from earning money by letting your blog serve Nuffnang ads, you also get the chance to attend exclusive movie premieres, attend very special events (they recently had one for Goldilocks which was attended by no less than GMA 7 heartthrob Dingdong Dantes) and join awards. Mindanaoan.com just received this text message from Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero on Senator Noynoy Aquino's declaration to run for president in the May 2010 elections: "He is a good friend and I wish him all the best in his endeavor. He is definitely a good addition to the roster of those who have declared their intention to run for President in order to give our people the widest and best possible choices for President." Escudero, 39, is also rumored to be a presidential candidate. Observers say that the young legislator is being eyed by the NPC Party to be its standard bearer in next year's presidential elections. Chiz Escudero will turn 40 on October 10, 2009. WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THIS, FELLOW MINDANAOANS?

My 3 younger brothers and I all loved to draw, paint and sketch. However, our father taught us how to further hone our skills. My father was a very talented illustrator. I used "was" because he died several years ago, back when I was still in college. He was an amazing artist - with just a charcoal pencil and a blank sheet of paper, he could whip up a very detail-oriented drawing of a hen taking care of its chicks in just a few minutes. He could sketch a portrait oh so effortlessly. He didn't like to trace and he seldom used an eraser. He drew from the heart. Fast forward many years - our youngest sibling Bon seems to be the only one who continues to dabble in the arts. My love for painting, drawing and sketching is still there --- I'm just one of those who need a major bout of inspi...

The Kapamilya Karavan 2009 in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao was a major success! The fun event, which was made possible by ABS CBN and SM City CDO, was held last August 28, 2009 (the very day CDO celebrated the Kagay-An Festival 2009!) at the Gran Via Lot, Pueblo de Oro. Virtually thousands and thousands of people came to watch the free show, which was the organizers' way of thanking the public for their continuous support. Mindanaoan was there because I was tapped to book two local bands (thank you, ABS CBN Manila!) Mindanaoan was also one of the official event photographers :) [the other one that I got was my brother hehe...but of course, right? :) ] Check out some of the photos that I took during the Kapamilya Karavan event in Cagayan de Oro below. Rumored presidentiable Sen. Chiz Escudero and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte share a light moment during Kadayawan Festival 2009

Fans of rumored presidentiable Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte will love the picture in this Mindanaoan blog entry. Opposition Sen. Chiz Escudero was one of the main guests of Mayor Rody during festivities marking the city’s Kadayawan Festival 2009 last August 22, 2009. Judging by the happy smiles on the faces of these two popular political personalities, do you think this is a sign of an alliance to come? WHAT DO YOU THINK? In his visits to Mindanao, by the way, Escudero has repeatedly called for increased investments by government in agriculture and infrastructure to maximize the island’s economic potential.

Mindanaoan can't help but blog about this. What happened late last Saturday night at a 24 hour fastfood store located at Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao reminded me of so many things --- two of which are the need for Mindanaoans to be more assertive and why I love Mindanao (and why it will always be home for me). Before I go any further, however, I would just like to emphasize that the following are just my personal opinions and are not meant to hit anyone. My post is more like a reminder...an eye-opener, if you will...of the fact that discrimination even among Filipinos (still) exist. Last Saturday night, right after the Tatak Environmentalist event, I went to a fastfood store at Divisoria. I decided to grab some grub as I waited for my brother to fetch me. As I fell in line a...

Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao aerial shots

During my PAL Express flight from the Cebu International Airport, Mactan to Cagayan de Oro Domestic Airport, I took some aerial shots. I got a window seat at that time (I was also supposed to have a window seat during my PAL Express CDO to Cebu flight but my seatmate, an elderly woman who confessed that it's been so long since she last traveled by plane, looked pale and scared so I no longer insisted) so it was easy for me to take aerial shots of Cagayan de Oro City as our plane descended and prepared for landing. Mindanaoan wishes to share these Cagayan de Oro City aerial shots:

Buy a shirt, plant a tree! Join Tatak Environmentalist

There's just something fun, socially aware and responsible about planting trees. To plant trees is to be aware of one's continuing responsibility to help protect Mother Earth and to help in the preservation of ecological balance. These are the very reasons why I didn't hesitate to extend my support to the "Tatak Environmentalist - One Shirt, One Tree Project" launch that will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at OIC, Corrales Street, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. For only P250.00, not only do you get a very nice shirt but that's also equivalent to one tree to be planted. And yes, during the launch, you will be treated to great, soothing music courtesy of talented CDO-based bands and performances from poi spinners and fire dancers. A video presentation on various environmental issues...
