President Gloria Arroyo’s press statement on the Maguindanao massacre

Announcements, Controversial, Cotabato, Crime, Headline, Maguindanao, Mindanaoan Update
Lame duck President Gloria Arroyo released a statement on the very gruesome Maguindanao massacre...the very massacre that led the International Federation of Journalists to declare that the Philippines is the most dangerous place for journalists to work in. Yep, after Efren Penaflorida's triumph as CNN Hero of the Year and after Mindanao Manny Pacquiao's 7th world title, the Philippines is again hogging headlines. And sadly, Mindanao is at the center of it all. I can't quite point a finger to it...I don't know but I feel icky whenever I read this so-called "press statement." Maybe because the government hasn't done a thing ever since this entire brutality took place. Or maybe because all of PGMA's mouthpieces have only exercised lip service and nothing else. Or maybe because I am just t...

By 2014, Mindanao power deficit will be equivalent to putting out power in 5 major Mindanao cities

Announcements, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro City, Cotabato, Davao City, Events, Headline, Mindanao, Mindanaoan Update, News, Technology, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga Sibugay
The press statement of the upcoming Mindanao Power Summit 2009 alarmed me. It said that "by 2014, projections have it that Mindanao will have a deficit capacity of 484 megawatts which is equivalent to putting out power in the five major cities of Mindanao - Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Butuan, and Cotabato." That means that five years from now, Mindanao will suffer a devastating power crisis and that the situation may reach the most critical state if we do not act fast and act now. The press statement also claimed that the entire Mindanao grid may experience regular rotating brownouts as early as next year (!), especially with the coming in of additional new investments that are anticipated to further deplete the grid’s reserve capacity. I don't know about you but their statemen...

Advocacy, Business, Commentary, Controversial, Corporate, Cotabato, Culture, Davao City, Koronadal, Mindanaoan Update, News, Opinion, Sarangani, SoSCksargen, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Weird
Yes, you read that right. A mining company operating in the Municipality of Tampakan has hired Danny Javier of the popular group APO Hiking Society. Javier is now a "strategist" for Sagittarius Mines, Inc., a gold and copper mine. As a "strategist," Javier is reportedly supposed to help SMI develop a "better image." It can be recalled that the said mining company, which has business interests in three large areas in Mindanao namely South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur, has and still is facing strong opposition especially from the Church. A lot of non government organizations which advocate environmental sustainability have also expressed their opposition against the operation of Sagittarius Mines. What makes this development noteworthy is that Danny Javier of APO Hiki...

Cotabato, Features, General Santos City, Headline, Mindanaoan Update, News, Personalities, SoSCksargen, South Cotabato, Sports
Mindanaoan gani, lahi ra gyud! :D Another Mindanaoan boxer is the current toast of the boxing world! General Santos City native Marvin "Marvelous" Sonsona recently defeated veteran Jose Lopez in a fight in Canada. Ang get this --- Marvelous Marvin Sonsona is just 19 years old! Wow! Which reminds me...Perhaps Marvin should reconsider his boxer name and change it to Marvelous Mindanaoan Marvin Sonsona! Hehe :D Lopez is said to be undefeated for 6 years. Unfortunately for him, a Mindanao boxer took up the challenge and...well...the world now knows who's better ;) Sonsona, who boxing experts say has powerful southpaw stance, fought in the junior bantamweight division. He defeated Jose Lopez via decision. AYOS! Found this video, by the way, courtesy of Queensberry Rules (check out m...

Mindanaoan Manny Pacquiao to face Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico

Announcements, Bisaya, Contests, Cotabato, Entertainment, General Santos City, Headline, Mindanaoan Artists, Mindanaoan Update, News, Personalities, Politics, Sarangani, Sports
Mark your calendars! Mindanao pride Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao will definitely face off with 28 year old Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto on November 14, 2009 at MGM Grand Las Vegas Nevada. Miguel Cotto is the current welterweight titleholder while our very own Filipino boxing champ Pacman won the boxing junior welterweight title this year after beating down Briton Ricky Hatton. As we Pinoys all know, Hatton lucked out after only two rounds. Mindanaoan and General Santos City's son Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto have reportedly agreed on a 145 pounds weight limit. The Pacquiao versus Cotto fight will be shown via HBO Pay Per View, according to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. I think I'll avail of our local cable TV company's offer of PPV access again. After all, nothing beats watching a Pac...

Asia America Initiative to provide emergency relief aid to Mindanao

Advocacy, Announcements, BIMP-EAGA, Cotabato, Gifts, Mindanaoan Update, Muslim Mindanao, News, Sarangani, SoSCksargen, South Cotabato
MINDANAO NEWS - Asia America Initiative, a non profit organization based in Washington D.C., United States, is set to visit Mindanao on July 27, 2009. This non-government organization is set to carry out an emergency relief mission to assist more than 90,000 men, women and children who have been displaced by heavy fighting in central Muslim Mindanao. The mission will be led by AAI president Albert Santoli. Mindanaoan gives this two thumbs up! According to a statement posted in the AAI website: "The evacuees are living in muddy open fields, under heavy rains with minimal plastic tarps to protect them. The temporary encampments have no clean water or sanitation facilities resulting in high incidences of fatal fevers, diarrhea, and viral infections and dehydration. AAI’s Catalyst fo...

Sen. Chiz Escudero urges Malacanang to diverte imported rice to Mindanao refugees

Commentary, Cotabato, Food, Government, Headline, Iligan City, Mindanaoan Update, News, Personalities
At least someone's thinking about Mindanao and Mindanao refugees! Opposition Sen. Chiz Escudero yesterday said that the government should act immediately to divert shipments of imported rice to central Mindanao so that the 380,000 refugees in evacuation centers won’t go hungry after a UN agency halted its food relief operations in the region. “We are faced with a humanitarian crisis that could become a disaster if this administration fails to act quickly to fill in the gap left by the UN World Food Program,” Escudero said. “Part of the rice we have been shipping in from abroad can be diverted to the ports of General Santos and Cotabato City. This will not make a dent in the NFA’s 82-day buffer stock,” he said. He also called on the government to ensure the safety of the staff of t...

The Globe WiMax Internet Service isn't new, yes...but the fact that it's expanding in Mindanao (and Visayas, actually) is certainly something exciting! Globe Telecom and Intel Philippines have partnered up to bring us WiMax or worldwide interoperability for microwave access. It's a cutting-edge service cum wireless technology that will bring Internet access to more and more Filipinos around the country. According to Globe, "WiMax is a standards-based technology designed to enable the deployment of wireless broadband access as a cost-efficient alternative to cable and wired broadband DSL. This new technology also aims to improve reach since it can cover distances greater than those covered by other wireless technologies like WiFi, CDMA, or 3G." Review: EMR Suites in Koronadal City, Mindanao

Cotabato, Hotels, Koronadal, Mindanaoan Update, Opinion, Reviews, SoSCksargen, South Cotabato, Tourism, Travel
My companions and I were billeted at EMR Suites in Koronadal City, Mindanao last week. We were in the land formerly called Marbel for a two-day gig at EMR Center, which was actually just a few steps away from EMR Suites. Two words to describe my 3-night stay? UBER COMFORTABLE. My room had a large queen sized bed (you may also opt for the room with two single beds), an airconditioning unit, a table large enough for you to place your laptop and a few work-related stuff on, a few stools (my room had three), a large flat screen TV, cable connection and space for your clothes. The bathroom, meanwhile, was clean (this is very important, of course). It had hot and cold shower. Water current was strong, which I liked. I was also provided with a towel, a roll of toilet paper and a small...

This is exactly why experts say it’s worth investing in mining stocks this year

Controversial, Cotabato, Mindanaoan Update, News, Opinion, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat
No need to look far, really. Central Mindanao is fast becoming the major hub of mining operations in the country. Just recently, a Filipino-owned company has sought from the regional Mines and Geosciences Bureau an exploration permit for copper, gold, and silver deposits in three provinces here in Mindanao. Tao Mohin Resources Corporation is the very first company to formally file an application for exploration permit this year. And get this - Tao Mohin Resources Corporation shelled out not less than P800,000 just so they can be granted permit to explore 14,831.7 hectares. If the company is willing to pay that much just for "exploration," you can just imagine just how much it's willing to invest once it finds that pot of gold (and copper and silver!) The said company is reportedly keen ...
