Speaking at Camera Club of Davao’s 37th anniversary

One of my deepest advocacies is to help share the good news about the power of social media and blogging. I try to do this by volunteering, being generous with my time and sharing my first-hand experience as much as I can. Even when I was still in New York, I had the privilege to share my insights and tips via #GoSocial. Speaking about social media for social good is one of my natural highs. I will always be grateful for each and every opportunity.

So you could just imagine how thrilled I was to receive an invitation to be the keynote speaker during the 37th charter anniversary of the Camera Club of Davao, the oldest and most respected photography club in Davao City.

It was truly an honor not only because they’re THE CCD but also because it meant heading back home to the city I was born and raised in and see old friends. One of whom was my dear Kuya Bingkoy, an active member and past President of the Camera Club of Davao. I haven’t seen him in ages but thanks to technology, we have kept in touch. And yes, thanks to him, I was invited to speak. I was told that previous keynote speakers included notable political and business leaders!

My message that night was simple – images, just like words, are very powerful. Images can prompt emotions and opinions. Images can inspire people to help, think, donate, speak out. Hence, taking photos isn’t enough. One must also know and understand WHY you’re taking them. Every photo should have a purpose, a story to tell. Photographers should share their content but they don’t need to be in all social media networks. They just need to be in the right ones.

I thanked the Davao photographers that night for using their skills and talents to capture the distinct beauty that is Davao and for helping translate each and everyone’s version of the city.

Thank you so much to the Camera Club of Davao. Special thanks to my Kuya Bingks, whom I have inadvertently christened as the CCD heartthrob haha! Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome.
