Mindanao-based blogger Mindanaoan was recently sent to Bangkok, Thailand for the World Health Organisation (WHO) - backed Global Summit on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics. This statement was sent to Mindanaoan: On Saturday night, my mother, Ruthie de Lara-Guingona, who is in her 70s and concluding a third term in office this year as mayor of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, was ambushed on her way home from a fiesta in the city’s outskirts. She was wounded but her driver and security escort did not make it. Brothers Nestor and Bartolome Velasco were killed due to a hail of bullets on board the Hi-Lux pick-up she was riding. Hi everybody! This Mindanao blogger was in the Province of Bukidnon for the Kaamulan Festival, a yearly gathering of Bukidnon's 7 hill tribes. One of the festival highlights was the much-awaited San Miguel Beer Night or SMB Night, which was held last March 10, 2013 at the Capitol Grounds, Malaybalay City. In order to raise awareness about climate change and the various measures that we all should take in order to address such problem, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has been organizing yearly Earth Hour events around the world. This year, Earth Hour 2013 will be a little more participatory and based on citizen initiative as WWF wants to encourage communities to start their own campaigns against climate change. Earth Hour 2013 is no longer just about asking people around the world to turn off non-essential lights for an hour. Back from the hospital

I first felt sick about a week ago. It all started with what I thought was a slight fever. I slept it off, thinking that I'd feel better when I woke up. I thought wrong. Not only did my fever stay, I also experienced pain all over my body and I also experienced chills. Good thing my mother and I just stayed at home that day so I asked her for some paracetamol and body pain reliever. I could barely sleep that night. The next day, my mother and I did the next best thing we could think of --- (Now don't judge us. Sendong Memorial In Iligan City

Hard to believe but yes, it's been a year since that deadly Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi). Typhoon Sendong claimed more than 1,000 lives and to this date, more than 500 people remain missing. Yesterday, December 17, 2012, a group came up with a Sendong Memorial Wall in Cagayan de Oro City, one of the two major cities that got hit by Typhoon Sendong. The Sendong Memorial Wall in CDO was made of Romblon marble and had the names of those who died and those who remain missing. Today, I found out that a Sendong Memorial in Iligan City was also unveiled last December 17, 2012. A creation by artist Julie Lluch, this masterfully crafted bronze sculpture depicts a little girl riding a log. The girl was one of the survivors of Typhoon Sendong. Tokyo Tokyo CDO is finally open! The very first Cagayan de Oro City branch of Tokyo Tokyo opened last November 29, 2012 at the 2nd Floor of Limketkai Mall but I was pretty lucky.
