The office of Bukidnon 2nd District Congressman Atty. John Flores has released a now considered viral video that highlights the Province of Bukidnon's breathtaking beauty. The 2-minute teaser video has racked up over 45,000 views and nearly 3,000 shares in just 15 hours. On his official Facebook page, Flores wrote: "Behold, the breathtaking spell that is - BUKIDNON Where beautiful people, rich culture and a glorious landscape that only a Higher Power can ever create - merge and exist in peace and unity. Where respect, music, dancing and even poetry reverberate in our hearts. You and I may have roamed the world but this is where we always yearn to go back to - our sweet Bukidnon home. I received a phone call about two hours ago. It was a tip. Apparently, the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division has issued a warrant of arrest for former Bukidnon First District Congressman Juan Romeo Nereus "Neric" Acosta and his mother, former Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon mayor Socorro "Coring" Acosta. The warrant of arrest was made in connection with a perjury case filed against the Acostas. I was a bit surprised when I heard the news, actually. Especially since last I heard, the complainant, Fr. Venancio Balansag, Jr., has already withdrawn his complaint and has issued an affidavit of desistance. A brief backgrounder - graft and corruption charges as well as charges for violating the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials were filed against Neric Acosta and his mother. Th...

I must say, I'm so relieved that I found several Mindanawon congressmen in the list of representatives who have perfect attendance in the first 45 days of session. These congressmen from Mindanao sure exemplified a good sense of public service. Hats off to all you, sirs! Here are the various Mindanao congressmen who have perfect attendance in Congress (at least within the first 45 days of session): Pedro Acharon Jr. (South Cotabato) Erico Basilio Fabian (Zamboanga City) Nur Jaafar (Tawi-Tawi) Rufus Rodriguez (Cagayan de Oro) Jesus Sacdalan (North Cotabato) Raden Sakaluran (Sultan Kudarat) Jose Ma. Zubiri III (Bukidnon) These Mindanawan congressmen, along with 36 others, received a Parker ballpen as a token. Their names were also reportedly announced in the chamber. ...

During the Open Budget Partnership forum I attended in Manila a few days ago, I saw an old friend. I didn't expect him to actually come since a member of the event secretariat told me earlier that day that he might not be able to drop by. Lo and behold, he came...and when I approached him to say hello, he looked a little bit surprised to see me there but nonetheless looked happy. The old friend I'm referring to is former Bukidnon First District Congressman Dr. JR Nereus "Neric" Acosta. Yes, he's the same Neric Acosta who ran for a Senate seat in May 2010. He's the same Neric Acosta who's a staunch advocate of environment protection, responsible population management, health and programs for climate change. And yes, he's the same Neric Acosta who authored the Clean Air Act and who's t...

PGMA in Bukidnon Mindanao today, to hold cabinet meeting – and why I want to be a fly on the wall

Bukidnon, Controversial, Government, Mindanaoan Update, News, Personalities, Politics
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is set to be in the Province of Bukidnon today, July 21, 2009. This trip, reportedly her 7th in Mindanao so far this year, could be, in my opinion, quite a controversial one. First of all, she's supposed to hold a cabinet meeting in Malaybalay City, the capital of Bukidnon. Why Bukidnon of all places, you ask? Exactly. Bukidnon is the "political home" of the Zubiris. Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri served as congressman in the third district for 9 years. Incumbent Bukidnon governor Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr. is on his last term. Bukidnon 3rd District Congressman Joey Zubiri is Migs' brother and eldest son of the governor. Malaybalay City Vice Mayor Ignacio "Inaki" Zubiri, nephew of the governor and cousin of the senator, is said to be eyeing the mayoralty post in ...

Yesterday, February 25, 2009, Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez ordered the filing of graft charges against former Bukidnon First District Congressman Neric Acosta, his mother former Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon mayor Socorro Acosta and his aunt Nemia Bornidor (member of the Board of Trustees of the Bukidnon Integrated Network of Home Industries, Inc. and JR Nereus Acosta's aunt). The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Fr. Venancio Balansag Jr., Fr. Wilredo Torayno, Vicente N. AbrogueƱa (now deceased), and Felix Vergara, Jr. representing the Bukidnon Crusade Against Graft and Corruption. The BCAGC alleged that on January 9, 2001, the former Bukidnon congressman and Yale World Fellow and then Mayor Amado Noble of Talakag, Bukidnon executed a Memorandum of Agreement providing for the appropr...
