Covering ABS CBN “Luv U” and “Goin’ Bulilit” press conferences

Blogging, Entertainment, Manila, Mindanaoan Update, Society, Television, Videos
So one of the things I did during a recent trip to Manila was attend a press conference at the ABS CBN Channel 2 Dolphy Theater. Attending (and organizing, even!) media briefings aren't new to me but that one was an exception - it was the first entertainment/showbiz press conference I attended in a very long time! It probably was my first ever - I'm not too sure. But I must say, it was a bit intimidating since I'm far more comfortable with politics and news and current affairs-related press gatherings. Still, I was interested to attend since I was curious as to how showbiz presscons were handled and I was also interested to observe entertainment reporters and listen to their questions. A little bit of background, though. I'm pretty familiar with the ABS CBN Manila compound since I worke...

Mindanao indigenous people decry portrayal of IPs in ABS CBN show “Noah”

This caught my attention because it's about a complaint filed against the representation (or misrepresentation) of indigenous peoples or Lumads in the ABS CBN Channel 2 show "Noah" starring Piolo Pascual and Zaijan Jaranilla. Here in Mindanao, the IP community is a highly respected group and as a Mindanaoan, I feel it is my duty to help advocate for their rights and help suppress discrimination, in whatever form it may be. Peace advocacy group Mindanao Peoples Caucus said that the primetime telenovela’s portrayal of Lumads as “monkey-like creatures” is a “blatant violation of the mandate of RA No. 8371 to respect, recognize and protect the right of the ICC’s/IP’s to preserve and protect their culture, traditions and institutions.” The letter-complaint, which was dated October 8...

Before you read this, though, have you read my previous entry? You may want to check out Mindanaoan artist Laarni Lozada's cool makeover (saw her in person during the "Sharon" taping). I must say, it's good to see a Mindanaoan singer doing pretty good in her chosen career and that she's doing well in Manila, too, so it seems. Kudos to Laarni! Anyways, on to my kuwento about my "Sharon" taping experience. Thanks to Miss Bing, I got passes enough for 5 people to watch the April 18, 2010 taping of Sharon Cuneta's show. Although it wasn't my first time to watch "Sharon," I still felt excited especially since I towed some of my friends along. I was the self-proclaimed ABS CBN complex tour guide of sorts that day --- we went to the cafeteria (where, during my days working in ABS CBN Manila, a...

Laarni Lozada, a fellow Mindanaoan, counts Sitti, Lea Salonga and Whitney Houston as among her singing idols. And now that she's a singing idol herself, Laarni of course has a new look. Pinoy Big Brother 2009 – PBB Double Up – has two Mindanaoans

Davao City, Entertainment, General Santos City, Mindanaoan Update, Television
So the Pinoy Big Brother 2009 PBB Double Up finally conducted its "magical reveal" of this year's housemates last night. Mindanaoan was able to watch parts of the show, which was hosted by Toni Gonzaga, Bianca Gonzales and Mariel Rodriguez. Thankfully, there are two Mindanaoan housemates this year. One is Melisa Cantiveros from General Santos City and the other is Marielle Sorino, a fellow Dabawenyo. Both are 21 years old. Melisa is dubbed as "Inday Kengkay" and is an aspiring teacher (during her brief interview, she spoke in English...with very good intonation, I must say!) while Marielle is a single mother and admitted to having been "rebellious" before - i.e. she drank and frequently partied and as a consequence, encountered conflicts with her parents especially her mom. The ...

More John Lloyd Cruz goodness – his song number during the Kagay-an Festival – video inside!

Cagayan de Oro City, Entertainment, Events, Mindanaoan Update, Music, Personalities, Videos
Wow, Mindanaoan has been bombarded with so many requests for more pictures of John Lloyd Cruz during the Kapamilya Karavan 2009 in Cagayan de Oro City. This Mindanao blogger has sooo many photos of the Filipino actor (and apparently with the number of requests...a certified heartthrob, too!) and I really need time to sift through all of them but just to appease his legion of fans...here's a video I took during the event. Pardon the quality of the video as I only used my LG Arena phone to record John Lloyd Cruz as he sang "Ngiti." Cheers to all of you Mindanaoan fans of this ABS CBN Channel 2 star...thank you for visiting my humble blog and please don't hesitate to spread the word to your fellow "Lloydie fans." More to come --- only here in Mindanaoan.com!

The Kapamilya Karavan 2009 in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao was a major success! The fun event, which was made possible by ABS CBN and SM City CDO, was held last August 28, 2009 (the very day CDO celebrated the Kagay-An Festival 2009!) at the Gran Via Lot, Pueblo de Oro. Virtually thousands and thousands of people came to watch the free show, which was the organizers' way of thanking the public for their continuous support. Mindanaoan was there because I was tapped to book two local bands (thank you, ABS CBN Manila!) Mindanaoan was also one of the official event photographers :) [the other one that I got was my brother hehe...but of course, right? :) ] Check out some of the photos that I took during the Kapamilya Karavan event in Cagayan de Oro below. Apart from the M.O.R. deejays an...

I was also tapped to book an official photographer who will...

Share your Maalaala Mo Kaya story at Limketkai Mall

Announcements, Arts, Cagayan de Oro City, Entertainment, Mindanaoan Update, Movies, Northern Mindanao
"Maalaala Mo Kaya," a drama anthology program aired via ABS-CBN Channel 2, will visit Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao! On August 7 to 9, 2009 at the Limketkai Mall in CDO, the staff of ABS-CBN's "Maalaala Mo Kaya" will be on hand to accept letters and stories from the public. Selected stories may then be featured in future "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episodes. The stories and letters will be accepted during mall hours. Will a Mindanaoan's story be the next to be featured in MMK? I remember that the 1994 Maalaala Mo Kaya movie starring Richard Gomez, Aiko Melendez and Chin Chin Gutierrez was based on a story of a Mindanaoan - a Davao City resident. That was a pretty controversial film, too, as some people apparently wanted to question the veracity of the story. Anyways, if you want to share y...

Baron Geisler and a girl smoking marijuana – caught on camera?

Controversial, Entertainment, Mindanaoan Update, Musings, Opinion, Personal
I received a rather weird (yet interesting, I must admit) offer via email yesterday. A girl who introduced herself as a certain "Angela Batumbakal" claimed that she has photos of "Jay" indie film lead actor Baron Geisler and another woman (unnamed) smoking marijuana. I found her email "interesting" only because I realize the lengths people go through just so they can either destroy a person or earn that quick buck. This "Angela Batumbakal" wrote: i have 5 clear pictures of baron geisler and a woman smoking marijuana.i found a memory card at an internet cafe and then i opened it and saw baron's pictures on it.if u are interested to have these pictures,u can send me an email.09099758776 [[email protected]] I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who received her so-called "offer," wh...
