Mass videoconference aims to link Manila and Iligan students

Before anything else, I’d like to say that I’m a proud RockEd volunteer. Rock Ed Philippines, which began in 2005, aims to get Filipinos interested in nation building. Rock Ed links Filipinos from all walks of life with causes that they are interested in. Once you sign up for Rock Ed, you’re assigned projects that fit your expertise, interests or skill sets. In my case, I usually volunteer for projects related to blogging, publicity, event management, photography, media and business-related stuff. Now this is where the point of this blog post starts 😀 You see, I found this project in the Rock Ed Philippines website. It’s about a mass videoconference that aims to link at least 2,000 students in Manila to at least 2,000 students in Iligan – yup, that’s all the way down here in Mindanao. How’s that possible? Read on…

PeaceTech is spearheading the 2nd Mass Videoconference on February 1, 2011, 1 to 5 PM, University Gym, PUP Sta. Mesa. The 2,000 students in Manila as well as the 2,000 students in Iligan, Mindanao will be linked via a 4 meg dedicated line and viewed through 17×20 feet screens! The Manila students and their teachers will be coming from La Salle Taft, CSB, Ateneo, PLM, PLU, FEU, Araullo, Lakandula, Esteban Abada, and FEU-Fern. They will be meeting students live from Mindanao State University IIT, Iligan Capitol College, Iligan City East High School, Tomas Cabili and other schools within the area. How’s that for high tech? 🙂

The mass video conference event is dubbed “Building Understanding through Technology” and is a large event connecting thousands of young Muslims and non-Muslims in Iligan and Manila. It will be an exciting demonstration of how we can leverage technology to build understanding.

The first mass videoconference was hosted by no other than advocate, host, actress and singer KC Concepcion:

This year, guess who’ll be the host in Manila?

Why, it’ll be the talented and smart Atom Araullo a.k.a. one of the cute male reporters these days 😉 [I’m sure Patty will agree! :D]

In Iligan, the host will be UN Ambassador Baicon Macaraya

Here’s another shot taken during the first mass videoconference (photos courtesy of the Facebook Page of Peacetech):

To Peacetech and everyone involved in this project, good luck to all of you! Hopefully, other groups will spearhead similar types of projects in their own areas. Kudos!
