Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City, Davao Del Norte, Davao del Sur, General Santos City, Mindanao, Mindanaoan Update, News
After hitting a snag on the JASIG issue, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan visited National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) headquarters in Utrecht, the Netherlands on July 7, 2011 in the hope that the kinks that have led to the postponement of the talks could be ironed out and that the peace talks could proceed. “Nagkaroon ng aberya. We took the initiative to go there after conferring with our government representatives,” said Pangilinan. Pangilinan presented his proposals for solving socio-economic and political problems to NDFP Negotiating Panel Chairperson Luis Jalandoni and NDFP Chief Political Consultant Prof. Jose Maria Sison. A few days ago, something terrible happened. A deadly landslide occurred in Bukidnon. The Bukidnon landslide happened in Sitio Hangaron, Barangay Lumbayao, Valencia City, Bukidnon. Not only were there victims in Lumbayao, some people including kids were also affected in nearby Barangay Tongan-Tongan. The Bukidnon landslide was, needless to say, very devastating. As of press time, 6 bodies have been recovered in both Barangay Lumbayao and Barangay Tongan-Tongan. The victims from Lumbayao included Maritess Lagunay, Segundina Lagunay and Sheryl Sadsad. The victims from Tongan-Tongan were 7 year old Joy Collamar and 6 year old Roque Santilla. Sheryl Sadsad is the wife of a friend of my brother's. Actually, I also know Sheryl's husband but he was closer to my brother. The landslide hit Sh...

Meeting Malaysian astronaut Dato Sheikh Muszaphar

Mindanaoan Update
How do you talk to an astronaut? More specifically, how do you talk to the very first Angkasawan (Malaysian astronaut) sent to space who’s tall, super smart, very passionate in his beliefs and very, very handsome without sounding like an awestruck schoolgirl? This was my very thought as soon as I found out that I was set to fetch, meet and spend time with the supposedly dashing 38 year old Dato Sheikh Muszaphar, who’s not only an Angkasawan but an orthopedic surgeon and part-time model as well. (Yes, he’s that amazing.) The last thing I wanted was to talk to someone who knew a lot about Physics, Medicine and Aerospace Engineering. Heck, I could barely remember the technicalities surrounding g-forces, gravity, micro-neurons and surface tension! How in the world could I even carry a logic...

Here's part two of the photos I took during the Azkals (Philippine football team) versus Sri Lanka Brave Reds game last July 3, 2011 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila, Philippines. If you want to take a peek of the photos included in Part 1, please visit this link. I was indeed one of the very lucky ones that day who got to watch the Azkals clobber Sri Lanka 4 - 0! Although it rained for several minutes, it still did not dampen everyone's spirits. All of the Azkals fans (including me, of course! :D) screamed their lungs out, participated in the "crowd wave," and had so much fun posing for the photographers who wanted to take photos of our happy, cheery faces :D By the way, I just learned that I was on TV that day haha :D Apparently, I was seated at the area where most ...

It was the day I've been waiting for. To finally watch our very own Philippine National Football Team AZKALS play against another team LIVE! It finally happened last July 3, 2011 at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila, Philippines. And I even had a Pilipinas Futbol Azkals shirt on to boot! Much, much thanks to my very generous sponsors, Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Dato Seri Dr. Ibrahim Saad and his lovely wife Datin Seri Dato Zainab Kader, I had a special front row seat to watch the Azkals play against the Sri Lanka Brave Reds. Just in case you're wondering, my ticket was worth a whopping Php 3,090.00! The day was truly memorable. One for the books! The Azkals won 4-0 (woohoo!) and successfully hurdled the first round of the World Cup qualifiers! Their first duel...

First things first. I am a Dabawenya. Hence, you know that I can be biased...and I am. I will not even try to deny it. No matter what people say, I think Davao City has gone a long way from being a mere "NicarAGDAO" (likened to Nicaragua...Agdao is one of the notorious areas in Davao where dead bodies would be found long ago...now it's a busy commercial district) to being one of the most livable cities in the world and part of the reason why my beloved hometown is doing this well are the Dutertes. Before I proceed, let me just say that this is not a political post. This will not be an in-depth analysis. This will not even cite the possible sanctions, the alleged violated laws etc etc. I will leave all of those to lawyers, analysts, political bloggers, columnists etc etc. Instead, this w...

It was a makeup workshop that I super wanted to attend but since I was still too tired from the big Singapore - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia trip (yes, went back just a few days ago!), I just opted to ask for a recap and some photos from our friends over at Spruce. Apparently, I missed a great deal --- the Suesh makeup workshop held recently in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao was a big success and all ladies who joined had first dibs of really cool Suesh products before these hit the Spruce store! The guest speaker during the makeup workshop was Ms. Suzzane Tan Go, makeup artist and one of the owners of Suesh. During the workshop proper, two sets of makeup techniques were introduced - the day look and the night look. The day look highlights light makeup, the kind that people can use during work...

The Battlestar Galactica rides in Universal Studios Singapore are two of the most popular in the said theme park - and for very good reason. Just imagine this - lifts, drops, cobra rolls, inversions (360 degrees!), a Zero-G roll, corkscrews and spins plus the fact that you go up as high as 14 storeys above the ground - all in just 90 seconds! Yes, folks, you hang on for dear life for 90 glorious seconds, scream your heart out...and when it's all done, believe me, you may even have the urge to go for seconds! The Battlestar Galactica rides comprise the world's tallest pair of dual roller coasters. It has two rides --- the "Human" version has you seated (red line) while the "Cylon" has you suspended, with your legs and feet dangling. I have not personally tried the Battlestar Galactica "H...

TV5 to tackle divorce in the Philippines in ‘Hamon sa Pagbabago’ debates

Announcements, Commentary, Controversial, Mindanaoan Update, Opinion, Television
Did you know that apart from the Vatican, the Philippines is the only remaining country in the whole world that continues to ban divorce? Before May 2011, there were two other countries - the Philippines and Malta, also a predominantly Catholic country like ours. However, Malta legalized divorce via a referendum last May 2011 and that only leaves us Pinoys who live in a country that still does not have divorce (although strictly speaking this is not entirely true since the Muslim community in the Philippines recognizes divorce). Amidst parliamentary debates on the reproductive health bill and other polarizing issues that affect Filipino families in particular, a women’s sectoral group revived House Bill 1799 that proposes divorce in the Philippines, leaving a hanging question if the Phi...

GMA 7 is really gearing up its efforts to promote their television programs and artists via regional events these days. In fact, I think GMA Channel 7 is keen on holding more and more promotional events not only in key cities but even in smaller towns and municipalities around Mindanao. Proof of this is their string of Kapuso Nights around Mindanao (and yes, in Visayas and Luzon as well). GMA 7 Kapuso Nights have so far been held in General Santos City, Iligan, Davao City, Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, South Cotabato and other areas in Mindanao. More will still be held in the next few weeks. Anyways, here are some photos taken during a GMA 7 Kapuso Night in Mindanao featuring Dingdong Dantes, Kyla and Moymoy Palaboy: Apart from the musical production numbers from the GMA 7 art...

All of the rides and shows featured at Singapore Universal Studios showcase themes based on blockbuster hits such as Shrek 4-D Adventure, Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure, Revenge of the Mummy and Battlestar Galactica (my favorite!) Zamboanga del Norte native declared by Guinness as world’s shortest man

So it's OFFICIAL. A fellow Mindanaoan is now the world's shortest man. Declared by the officials of the Guinness Book of World Records as the new "world's shortest living man," Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte resident Junrey Balawing celebrated his 18th birthday last June 12, 2011 (a day before the Philippine Independence Day). The Guinness people officially measured the Zamboangueno, however, on the eve of his birthday at Sindangan Health Center, Sindangan township, Zamboanga Del Norte, Mindanao. That makes Junrey Balawing not only the world's shortest living man today but the world's shortest living man in history as well! Guess what Balawing's measurements were? The Zamboanga native was measured at 24 and 1/4 inches (about 61 centimeters) lying down and about two inches shorter than t...
