Malacanang confirms appointment of Ramon Jimenez as new Tourism Secretary

Twitter was abuzz today with reports that Philippine President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has found a replacement for Alberto Lim, erstwhile Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary. Lim resigned, citing personal reasons. Aquino reportedly accepted Lim’s resignation effective August 31, 2011.

Now, Malacanang has confirmed reports that a new person has been found to lead the Department of Tourism. In a press release, Malacanang said that Ramon Reyes Jimenez Jr. has been appointed by Aquino as Acting Secretary of the Department of Tourism. Jimenez is now the new Tourism Secretary.

Mon Jimenez, as he is known to his peers, has been in the field of marketing communications for a total of 35 years, and is considered one of the pillars of Philippine advertising. He has been a writer, creative director, executive for the country’s top advertising agencies. The founder and CEO of JimenezBasic, he was Joint Chief Executive Officer and Senior Consultant at WOO Consultants, sharing his expertise with a number of successful corporations.

The new Philippine Tourism Secretary has also worked as a Journalism and Marketing Communications instructor in some of the country’s most renowned universities, and is a sought-after lecturer for many successful corporations such as the San Miguel Corporation and the Jollibee Group.

Ramon Jimenez is also a marketing consultant for the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation.

“We are confident that with his expertise, Secretary Jimenez will be able to build on the success of our tourism sector and expand the markets of this country’s tourism hubs. The President, together with the entire Executive branch of government, welcomes Secretary Jimenez to his official family and looks forward to the growth of his industry and to the improved global profile of many of our country’s tourist destinations,” according to the press statement from the Office of Communications Secretary Ramon Carandang.

So now I ask — what’s the very first thing that you want new Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez do to improve Philippine (and yes, especially Mindanao) tourism?
