Review: Cebu R Hotel | Cebu City hotel

If you’re a regular reader of my humble Mindanaoan blog, chances are you’d know that I frequently visit the Queen City of the South – Cebu City. Not only because I like to visit but I also because I need to. You see, I recently expanded my lil public relations, events management and media and marketing business in Cebu 🙂 This means that I can now cater to businesses and individuals based in Cebu and neighboring islands that need PR, media relations, events management and marketing services.

Anyhoo, I was recently in Cebu…yet again. Since my mom traveled with me, I thought of booking a room in one of Cebu’s many affordable hotels. I also wanted to stay in a Cebu hotel that I haven’t stayed in yet (so that I can review it and share my thoughts with y’all, of course! :D). I landed on Cebu R Hotel‘s website.

Located within walking distance from Cebu Doctor’s Hospital and just two blocks away from Cebu Capitol, Cebu R Hotel is a little hotel located along Don Mariano Cui Street. It’s located at the “quieter” section of the Capitol area but coffee shops, dining areas and even Robinson’s Mall Fuente is within reach.

Cebu R Hotel offers daily room rates inclusive of complimentary breakfast. I booked a deluxe twin room. Paid about P1,200 (the original price was P1,350 but we availed of my mom’s senior citizen discount…we were only given a 10% discount instead of the usual 20%…I know, right? HMMM)

Our room looked something like this: (except that our room only had two beds)

Our room at Cebu R Hotel was airconditioned, it had one queen sized bed and one single bed, a 19″ LCD cable TV, a phone, a small table and a chair and a refrigerator. It also had a small cabinet and an area where you can place your luggage. I specifically requested for a room with a window and strong wireless Internet access. Thankfully, we were assigned in a room that had a window (there was not much of a view, though) and had strong and steady Wi-Fi Internet. Wi-Fi access is FREE.

The washroom was clean. Equipped with hot and cold shower, the bathroom also had small sachets of shampoo, day soaps and towels. The towels felt rough, unfortunately. There were no hotel slippers so best if you bring a pair.

Breakfast the next day was just okay. Choices include Filipino and continental meals. When we had our breakfast the next day, my mom availed of the American breakfast while I had tosilog (pork tocino, sinangag or fried rice and itlog or egg). The meals tasted bland and the servings were small.

Our stay was pretty short so I kind of thought that we wouldn’t encounter any problems at Cebu R Hotel at all.

I was wrong.

During check-out, the receptionist asked me to write my full name on a piece of scratch paper. She said that she needed my name for the official receipt. So I wrote my name. Then my mom asked her if we could leave our luggage first and have them stored for a few hours while we go to the nearest mall. The receptionist said yes and even said that their luggage storage service was free. Fine. Then, she asked my mom to write her full name on another piece of scratch paper. I told her that there was no need since she (the receptionist) already had my name. She said that she still needed my mom’s full name. Determined not to let her ruin our day, my mom obliged. She wrote her name on the piece of scratch paper. The receptionist then tucked the piece of paper on our luggage. Curious, my mom asked for a luggage tag. You know, the kind that you will just present to them when you come and retrieve your stuff. The receptionist said they didn’t have any. Amused, I asked the receptionist what their luggage retrieval process was. The receptionist had the oddest answer:

“Present your official receipt, show us your ID then your mom should also show her ID and the name on the piece of paper and on the IDs must match.”

I swear, I got so dizzy when I heard her answer. It was the strangest process ever! We’ve checked in so many hotels here and abroad but never have we heard such a tedious, befuddling answer.

Anyways, needless to say, the day receptionist needs more training. Also, the Cebu R Hotel management needs to polish their policies and procedures, if only to make things easier for their paying hotel guests.

So does this blogger from Mindanao recommend Cebu R Hotel? From a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, I give Cebu R Hotel an 8.

I hope that when I stay at this cheap hotel in Cebu again, I can give it a higher – or even a perfect! – grade.
