So during Mindanaoan's Sinulog Festival 2010 escapade, I had the chance to catch one of the performances featured in the "Cebu, Cebu" event held at a large mall in Cebu City. "Cebu, Cebu" is an event that aims to focus the best of Cebu --- from food to designers to jewelry to crafts to artists. And two of the artists that came to perform during that weeklong celebration included singer-actress Pinky Marquez and crooner Chad Borja. Chad Borja may be from Cebu but he has been based in Davao City for several years now. He regularly performs at Kanto Bar over at Matina Town Square (MTS), Matina, Davao City, Mindanao. Kanto Bar, by the way, is a favorite "must-drop-by" place by Manila-based Dabawenyo artists. Artists like Jay Durias and Jinky Vidal and the rest of Freestyle band. Whenever...

Mindanaoan is off to yet another fun adventure! Mindanaoan will be off to the Queen City of the South - Cebu City - today to take part in this year's colorful Sinulog 2010 or what's dubbed as the Sinulog at 30. Here's hoping that I will have a safe trip today via Philippine Airlines (Mindanaoan's favorite airline as of late). Nay, make that a trip that will push through! I'm a bit worried because it's been rainy the past few days and I heard about the Cebu Pacific Air passengers who got stranded at the CDO airport. Hundreds of passengers who were supposed to be bound for Cebu were reportedly left to fend for themselves as the airline refused to provide food and accommodation because, according to the Cebu Pacific Airlines management, they weren't obliged to provide anything especially i...

The 30th Lanzones Festival of the Island of Camiguin aims to give tribute to...well, what else...but the delicious lanzones fruit. If you haven't tried lanzones from Camiguin, Mindanao yet, you're missing a lot! Camiguin lanzones are best known for their sweet taste. If you're heading on down to Camiguin Island, don't forget to bring your camera, lots of suntan lotion (Mindanaoan highly recommends that you visit both Mantigue Island and White Island), swimwear and other travel essentials...just don't bring sand, please! There are funny (but cute!) things to see in the place dubbed as "Island Born of Fire." By the way, if you're looking for a hotel...

Here's another reason why you should all go and visit Iligan City, Mindanao during their fiesta month this year (September 2009 up to first week of October 2009). "Higantes" will be among the attractions in this year's celebration of the Iligan City fiesta. These "higantes" (giants), made of paper mache, cloth and other indigenous materials, will be part of the "Kasadya Street Dancing and Merrymaking" event. Similar to Angono, Rizal's "Higantes," (see inset picture) the entries will vie for a cash prize of P20,000.00. Each "higante" entry must not exceed 12 feet in height. Organizers also say that the entries must depict two characters linked to the Iligan City fiesta namely St. Michael and Luzbel (Lucifer). I guess this will be one fun event to take photos of! The Kapamilya Karavan 2009 in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao was a major success! The fun event, which was made possible by ABS CBN and SM City CDO, was held last August 28, 2009 (the very day CDO celebrated the Kagay-An Festival 2009!) at the Gran Via Lot, Pueblo de Oro. Virtually thousands and thousands of people came to watch the free show, which was the organizers' way of thanking the public for their continuous support. Mindanaoan was there because I was tapped to book two local bands (thank you, ABS CBN Manila!) Mindanaoan was also one of the official event photographers :) [the other one that I got was my brother hehe...but of course, right? :) ] Check out some of the photos that I took during the Kapamilya Karavan event in Cagayan de Oro below. DSS Fireworks Dumaguete wins 1st Cagayan Pyrolympics during Kagay-an Festival 2009

Announcements, Cagayan de Oro City, Contests, Entertainment, Events, Festivals, Fiesta, Mindanaoan Update
The award-winning DSS Fireworks of Dumaguete City bagged the grand prize in the recently concluded 1st Cagayan de Oro Fireworks Competition (Pyrolympics) held at the Gran Via Lot (beside SM City CDO). DSS Fireworks, a four-time grand champion of Buglasan Festival in San Carlos, also got the top prize during the Sinulog Festival 2009 fireworks contest. Mindanaoan was among the thousands of people who trooped to the Gran Via Lot last August 29, 2009 to witness the fireworks display. I went with my brother Bon, who fortunately brought his motorcycle. You see, that event caused very heavy traffic at the Pueblo de Oro area (and I mean really, really heavy traffic) but because we were aboard a motorcycle, we were able to avoid the traffic bottleneck/congestion. That night was a good one al...

Of course, the ABS CBN Cagayan de Oro family, M.O.R. CDO family and some representatives from ABS CBN Manila will be at the event. This early, not a few have already told me that they'll be at the venue early so that they can situate themselves near the stage. Sabagay...who wouldn't want to be up close and personal with Mr. Ingat himself? Mindanaoan was tapped to book two local artists that will s...

Davao City, Mindanao is all set for Kadayawan Festival 2009!

Announcements, Davao City, Entertainment, Events, Features, Festivals, Fiesta, Mindanaoan Update, News, Society
The City of Davao is geared up for this year’s celebration of the Kadayawan Festival. As city streets have already been adorned with colorful buntings and streamers, the 2009 Kadayawan Festival Executive Committee - headed by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte along with private sector co-chair Lorenzo Te, Jr. - has lined up an exciting calendar of events for this year’s celebration. This year’s theme, “Naghiusang Katawhan Nakigdait sa Kalibutan” (“One People in Communion with the Earth”), fittingly responds to the need of the times as Dabawenyos are reminded of their responsibilities towards Mother Earth. As Davao’s indigenous tribes have deemed the earth as the core of their existence, they have also maintained a special connection to the earth which is also the source of the life, livi...

Horse fights to be re-staged during Kadayawan Festival 2009

Advocacy, Controversial, Culture, Davao City, Events, Festivals, Fiesta, Government, Mindanaoan Update, News
I can already smell the protests courtesy of animal welfare advocates. Horse fights (also known as "Paaway Kuda"), which are part of the culture of indigenous peoples, will be revived in this year's Kadayawan Festival 2009 celebration. Horse fight competitions will be staged from August 17 to 23, 2009 during the 2009 Kadayawan in Davao City, Mindanao. I bet the people behind the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and other animal welfare organizations can't wait to travel to Davao and condemn the "cruel" competitions. Recently, the Davao City Council Committee on Lumads (Indigenous Peoples), led by Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, revealed that the National Commission for Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) has approved the staging of horse fights during the Kadayawan Festival. In a horse f...
