Tonkatsu by Terazawa is a Japanese Katsu Restaurant by Chef Akinori Terazawa from Nagoya, Japan, locally franchised in the Philippines by The Bistro Group, same owners of Italianni’s and T.G.I. Fridays. Here in Mindanao, Tonkatsu by Terazawa opened their first branch at the First Floor, Garden Area of Ayala Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.
My family and I are regular Tonkatsu by Terazawa customers. We love their katsu meals as well as some side dishes. The Tonkatsu by Terazawa Centrio CDO branch is also comfy albeit small (they share space with Italianni’s) – a nice place to bring your loved ones for Sunday lunch, your friends for Saturday get-together or your business partners for power Monday meetings. I also like the hand-painted Japanese characters, lanterns and other accents inside the restaurant.
Here are some of my recommended picks off their menu:
The Chasoba Salad – a favorite. It’s a cold noodle salad served with nori strips, Japanese mayo, scrambled egg strips, tomatoes and more. Really very tasty.
Pork Karaage – this is delicious. Breaded pork strips. Best with beer or sake!
Katsudon – deep fried pork loin topped with egg.
Of course, my most recommended are the katsu sets! Here are some of those I’ve tried:
The Iberico Katsu set. Made of the finest black Iberico pork with delicate nutty marbling. Iberico pork is derived from a special breed found in the south and southwest areas of Spain. Popularly known as “Pata Negra,” this is “healthy pork” as the pigs have 50% unsaturated fats like that of olive oil.
This katsu set, like all other katsu sets served at Tonkatsu by Terazawa, is served with REFILLABLE (UNLIMITED) servings of Japanese rice, shredded cabbage and a bowl of hot Tonjiru (a special miso soup flavored with pork).
Iroiro Katsu – this is a set of assorted katsu choices. This one is composed of prawn, oyster and hire. Good choice if you want to try more than just pork.
The specialty of the house – the Kurobuta Katsu. If you want to treat yourself and your loved ones, this is the best choice. It will take only one bite for you to understand why it’s the restaurant’s crowning glory. The Kurobuta Katsu uses premium meat from the original strains of Berkshire hogs from Japan.
By the way, feel free to ask assistance from the friendly Tonkatsu by Terazawa attendants in preparing the sesame seeds, house blended Tonkatsu sauce and Japanese salt. This is important since you’d need to dip the katsu in the sauce. There are also two sauces for the shredded cabbage. Again, feel free to ask the attendants for assistance 🙂
For dessert – try the bestselling Frozen Green Tea. Perfect ending to your Tonkatsu meal!
